Since 2006, the network of member agencies served by Second Harvest has reported nearly a 40% increase in those seeking assistance at local food pantries.
The U.S. Census reported in 2003 the population of the entire four-county region is 476,198 with 8.9% living below the federal poverty level. With nearly 43,000 people living below the poverty level the Food Bank is working tirelessly along side a network of member agencies to help those in need in our community.
Soup kitchens and shelters provide a safety net for men, women and children. In 2005, nearly 150,000 meals were served at local soup kitchens and shelters throughout the region.
In nearly every community small and large in our region a food pantry operates to assist those in need. 33,000 men, women & children rely on Second Harvest for some of their food needs. |
